　　The Great British Weather Obsession

　　1 If you start a casual conversation with a British person, you will almost certainly begin by discussing the weather in the first few minutes. A study suggests more than nine out of ten Brits have talked about the weather in the last six hours, and the average British person spends the equivalent of four and a half months of their life talking about the weather. They don’t confine themselves to talking either: the average adult will post seven weather-related comments a month on social media and spend eleven minutes a week checking the forecast either on TV, an app on their phone, or the internet.

　　2 Oscar Wilde was not impressed by this national obsession. He said that the tendency to include the weather so frequently in conversation was the last refuge of the unimaginative. I think that his opinion was harsh. Unlike other nationalities who might quickly jump into personal conversation, British people are far more reserved; a topic like the weather is much less intrusive and almost always begins with an exclamation, “It’s raining again!”.

　　3 Why do the British talk about the weather so much? The obvious reason is the unpredictability of British weather. The weather can occasionally be balmy, but most of the time it is barmy! 　　4 The British language is full of phrases about the weather: ‘come rain or shine’, ‘right as rain, ‘raining cats and dogs’, to ‘not have the foggiest’, are just a few which are guaranteed to confuse.
